Now many have heard about affirmative action, giving minorities a chance to have a higher education. Recently I have read an article, stating that there are people who go against affirmative action, and they wanted to make a statement. University of California, Berkeley students did a bake sale for students. Now what does a bake sale have to do with affirmative action. Well while hosting this bake sale they charged customers different prices depending on their ethnicity and gender They knew that charging these customers differently was racist but they wanted to make a statement. They said,
“We agree that the event is inherently racist, but that is the point,” said Shawn Lewis, president of the Berkeley College Republicans, in a written statement on the group’s website. “It is no more racist than giving an individual an advantage in college admissions based solely on their race or gender.”
I aksed myself why is it a problem to give minorities a chance to get into college? There was a reason to why this law was established and i agree with it. Minorities in my opinion have a difficlut way to get things done in life. As learned in sociology and history, whites have more privileges then those of other races such as blacks. Blacks are not the only race that has been through hardships throughtout history, Irish, Mexicans, etc, has been in difficult situations also. So affirmative action in my opinion is not something that put other races down, but something that helps others (minorities). Berekeley studentsobviously didn’t think so. This is what they charged the different groups. Cupcakes to white men for $2, Asian men for $1.50, Latino men for $1, black men for 75 cents and Native American men for 25 cents. Meanwhile, the group gave women of those ethnicities a 25-cent discount on those prices. When seeing this i actually thought it was ridiculous, don’t you think?
“The purpose of the pricing structure … is to cause people to disagree with this kind of preferential treatment,” Lewis told CNN. “We want people to say no race is above another race, or no race is below another one
I understand that no other race is above another, but can we actually say that in the society we live in. It seems as though many people want to be white. At least pass as a white person depending on their skin tone. For them to bring this up, again in my opinion is not actually what society portrays. Lets face the facts minorities have less privaleges then any other, so i do not agree with them trying to fight affirmative action. My question is do you agree with the berekeley students? If anyone want to agree or disagree first read the article to get a broaden knowledge of the article. http://www.citytowninfo.com/career-and-education-news/articles/uc-berkeley-student-group-holds-controversial-bake-sale-11092901
